Obituary of Mamie Madeline Guy

Mamie Madeline Walker was born November 18, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and transitioned to glory on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 in Lindenwold, New Jersey with her daughter Gloria by her side and with her eyes staring as if someone was in the room with her and her arms stretched out towards them.  Mamie was one of nine children born to Edith and John T. Walker in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  She is the last surviving of the nine children (John T., Charles, Alfred, Naomi, Florence, Mary Ellen and two that died as babies with names not known).  She attended public schools in Pittsburgh and years later would obtain her GED in which she was very proud of the unfinished goal achieved.  She was married to Reuben Guy, and they were blessed to have seven children (Reuben, David, Diann, Christine, Linda, Gloria, Gary).  An eighth child died at birth.    

The family also resided in Yellow Springs, Ohio and Newark, New Jersey.  With the help of her sister Naomi Smith, Mamie later moved her children to Albany, New York where she cared for and provided for her family as a Homemaker.  She also held a position as clerical typist.  Family was very important to her and she loved writing letters and sending cards.  She loved having pictures of all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren around her rooms.  She would always ask what was going on with each person that visited or called.  As well as inquiring about loved ones she hadn’t heard from in a while.  She liked hearing what they were doing and how they were doing in their lives.

She loved fixing up her home and would often decide to paint or rearrange furniture for a new look.  She also loved to take care of her house plants and flowers.  She certainly had a green thumb.  She loved being visited by her family and taking family pictures especially holding the grandchildren which she has passed down to the generations who also love taking lots of pictures.  She loved to knit and had a sense of humor when they didn’t turn out as planned.  She was known to experiment with food and try to create new recipes and giggle when we joked about her new dishes.  She loved the Lord.  She would clip scriptures and write letters about her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with highlights and would often send them to family members in her letters as long as she was able.  She enjoyed remembering birthdays with cards and letters and it was very important to her, as well as giving to loved ones at Christmas.  Although she was not able to physically attend or join St. Matthews Baptist Church, Williamstown, NJ, where her son and family worshipped and served, she loved watching Pastor, Dr. Raymond M. Gordon Sr. preach and teach the Word of God on TV and also supported the ministry through love offerings.

In 1996, while employed as a Housekeeper at St. Peters, Hospital, Mamie was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease along with onset Dementia.  She and her daughter Gloria were moved to Lindenwold, New Jersey in 2012 to be cared for by her son Gary with Gloria providing full time physical care.  Doctors were amazed at Mamie’s good health due to the care that was being provided in spite of her age and her illnesses.  Although she lost her ability to write letters and send cards. She collaged pictures of all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren around her bedroom.  With her health challenges, to see her sitting up in a chair or in the bed you would not know she was so ill.  She never lost her love for good food, laughter, and something “sweet” after she ate.

Mamie leaves to cherish her memory: Florence Porter (Aunt), Eddie Rose (Brother-in-law), Gladys J. Walker (Sister-in-Law), her children, Diann (John), Christine, Linda (Morgan), Gloria, and Gary (Crystal); Grandchildren, Great-grandchildren, Great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews.
