Obituary of Amos Lee Davis

Amos Lee Davis was born on September 8, 1924, into a family of twelve children, on a small tobacco farm in Chatham, Virginia. As a young boy, Davis grew up farming and helping his family throughout the fields of Southern Virginia. Being a young African-American, Davis was never able to display his potential through education. But because of this, Davis drove the extra mile to establish a foundation for his family and a healthy environment for his five children.

Amos Davis has always been a servant to the Kingdom of God. Many would consider him to be one of the founding pillars of Christ Care Unit Missionary Baptist Church. As the church was beginning to develop, Amos was the first person to raise money for the church by holding a gospel quartet concert at Winslow Township School Number 3. Davis' first job at the church was housekeeping and light carpentry. Besides Davis' heart for giving back, he also loved music and especially quartets. Amos was the first to establish a four man gospel quartet and later developed the male chorus. Continuing his care for the church, he was established as a trustee and gave his time as a security guard for many years within the church. It is no surprise that Amos Davis loved the church and he continued to give his time, love and support through his prayers.

Amos Davis is not only a legacy in the church, but he is also a father of five, grandfather of thirteen, great-grandfather of twenty-three and a great-great-grandfather to one. His words of wisdom and caring nature have allowed him to see the success of his children and grandchildren. As a grandfather and great-grandfather, Davis has seen his grandchildren graduate from high schools and colleges, attended award ceremonies, celebrated birthdays, and has always been an active part of his grandchildren's lives. Amos davis would give his last to see that everyone had what they needed. Aside from his prayers, he continued to support his family through his advice and short stories of his childhood. One of his quotes that continue to reigh is, "Stay in school and get an education. Get the education that I never had."

In an everyday scenario, Davis could be found watching the Phillies Game with his son-in-law, Nate, waking up to a bowl of Raisin Bran, and calling his "grands" to make sure their on the right track. If you ever wanted to see a huge smile on Davis's face, just bring hinm some peach cobbler and brownies. His sweet heart was no match for his sweet tooth. Amos Davis is not only a legacy in the community, but in the family as well. Although he is absent from the earth, he is welcomed with open arms in the heavenly realm. The words, the hugs and the advice are constant reminders of a great man of God who loved his family, church and God.

Amos Davis leaves cherished memories with his five children, Pat McCain, Roy Steve, Amos Jr., Alma Jean and Nona Land; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; one son-in-law, Narone Land; one brother, Ollie; three sisters, Ruth, Alma and Ann; a special friend, Mary Benjamin and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and CCU family.
