Obituary of Christine Christian

Christine Bernice Christian, affectionately known as “Critty” or “Chris”, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 25, 2018, after a lengthy illness. She was born on March 15, 1940, to the late Martha and Morgan Christian in Mt. Holly, New Jersey. She was the 12th child of 13 children. At the age of eight, the family moved to Berlin, New Jersey. She was educated in the Berlin Township School system. As a young girl, she was a member of the camp fire girls (girl scouts), under the leadership of Mattie Bowser. She graduated from the Lower Camden County Regional High School (Overbrook High) in 1958. Christine became the proud mother to the love of her life, Theresa Renee Christian.

She joined Green Grove Baptist Church early in life under the direction of the late Reverend W. L. Turner. She was a member of the Usher Board, Inspirational Choir, and later, she became a member of the Finance Committee. Christine was a faithful member of her church before her health began to fail in 2014. However, she shared a great love for both her church and her family.

She started her career as a cashier in 1963 and worked at Pathmark Supermarket for 39 years. Christine retired in 2002, without a break in service. She enjoyed various hobbies, such as sewing, reading, and cooking, specializing in her famous potato salad. She was also very fond of crabs. Christine loved to spend time with her family and had a special love for her grandson, Shaun Benjamin Kirkley. She loved to travel with the infamous “JACKSON FIVE” – Della & Bernard Woods, Esther & the late Roosevelt Rivers. Later in life, she was involved in other organizations, such as the American Legion Post 357 of Berlin, New Jersey and the CB (Citizens Band) Club of Berlin, New Jersey.

She leaves to cherish her memory one devoted and dedicated daughter, Theresa Renee Christian-Kirkley; son-in-law, Benjamin Kirkley; a grandson, Shaun Benjamin Kirkley; one special brother, Oliver Cannon; two special and loving sisters, Della Woods (Bernard Woods) And Esther Rivers (the late Roosevelt Rivers); a special niece, Malinda T. Woods-Dupree and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
