Please share a memory of Oliver to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The Heavenly Father, in need of a jewel for His crown, quietly called home master jeweler craftsman, Oliver Edgar Butcher on Sunday, May 4, 2014. Oliver, the youngest of 8 children, was born in Chestertown, Maryland on March 9, 1925 to Delia Davage and John W. Butcher. He was raised in a God fearing home and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ in his adult life. Known fondly as "Butch" or "Uncle Bud" to family and friends, he was aware that education was a necessity and attended Chestertown School System. Feeling the urge to serve his country, Oliver entered the United States Army and served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Recognizing his worth, he was awarded The Certificate of Appreciation from the State of Maryland for his participation in the Armed Forces. He also received the National Defense Service Medal, given by the United States of America. His military experience gave him the energy he needed to be thrust into the "real world". He moved to Manhattan, New York and opened a successful restaurant called, "Butch's". It was as "Butch's" that Oliver met the love of his life, Vernell Toomer. She was to be his "blind date". After five years of delicious food and good conversation, they married in 1964. They were married 49 years and 3 months. To this loving union was born two children. Prior to permanent retirement, he drove for STA (Student Transportation of America). Oliver was blessed and gifted with many talents; a broad warm smile, which gained him many friends, the ability to design and create beautiful, one of a kind jewelry pieces, the ability to give advice and remain understanding and would help anyone in need. To carry on his zest for life and people are: his loving wife Vernell; devoted daughter Michelle D. Butcher-Williams; dedicated son John O. Butcher; grandchildren, Corey D. Hairston and Tyreese J. Butcher; two sisters, Ollie Hence of Woodbury Heights, NJ and Cordelia Hynson of Chestertown, MD and a multitude of dutiful nieces and nephews.
