Phyllis L. Ridgway Scott was born to the late Blaine Ridgway and Lillian Mae (Morgan) Ridgway on September 11, 1929 in Palmyra, New Jersey. She was the youngest of three siblings, a brother, James A. Ridgway and a sister, Lauralee Ridgway Green, both deceased.
Phyllis attended the palmyra public school system, graduating from Palmyra High School, Class of 1947.
On October 23, 1948, Phyllis married James L. Scott, Jr. at the fifth Street Chapel, Ft. Ord, California where Lloyd served in the military. From this loving union, two children were born, Snadra Lee Scott and James L. Scott, III.
While at Ft. Ord, Phyllis worked at the separation center and had the pleasure of typing her husband's Army Discharge. Upon returning to Palmyra, she worked at the Army Signal Corps. and the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. While her children attended elementary school, Phyllis served on the PTA Executive Board. Eventually returning to the workforce, Phyllis spent 15 years with the Dept of HUD and retired on June 1, 1990 after 25 years of service.
Phyllis held the longest active membership at St. Paul U.A.M.E Church of Palmyra, NJ; before her passing, where she started at a very early age. She was a member of the Senior Choir and served dutifully as Church Treasurer for fifty-nine (59) years. Along with her faithful husband and members, she spearheaded many fundraising events. Phyllis faithfully worked to serve her family and St. Paul.
On Sunday, June 9, 2013, Phyllis accepted God's call to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
She leaves to cherish fond and loving memories, her devoted husband of 64 years, James Lloyd Scott, Jr.; two beloved children, Sandra L. Scott-Shah and James L.Scott III and his fiancé', Michelle Dio; two grandchildren, DeAndre' and Isabella; two special nieces June Hayes and Phyllis Green; one brother-in-law, Theodore R. Scott, Sr. (Frannie); two sisters-in-law, Yvonne Burroughs and Geraldine Baynard. Phyllis is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins her church family and friends.
