William J. Edwards Obituary

William James Edwards son of the late Alice Abernathy and George Edwards was born August 4,1929 in Riverton NJ, He departed his life on February 9, 2024, at home in Trenton, New Jersey, surrounded by family.


William a.k.a. Brother attended the Riverside School District from elementary school to the 10th grade. He did not graduate high school but did receive his GED.


In 1950 (during the Korean War), he enlisted in the US Army at the age of 21 where he served for three years. In 1953, he transferred to the Army Reserves serving the rest of his term and was honorably discharged in 1957.


He began working for the United States Postal Service in Riverton, NJ working as a mail carrier for many years and retired as Postmaster.


He joined First Baptist Church in Riverside, NJ as a young man and served as a trustee for many years. In 2016, he was ordained as a deacon at Little Rock Baptist Church, Camden, NJ where he served diligently for his church family until his health prevented him from doing so.


He was a member of the Scottish-Rite Masons where he acquired his 33rd and last degree in 1978 and he also held the position as Grand Master.


He was predeceased by his siblings Wilamae, Frankie & Theodore Edwards, Ruth Boyd and Queen Ester Hellen, his son Glenn Edwards, his daughter Sharon Edwards, his great granddaughter Di’on Abner and also his dear friend Helen W Henry leaving one surviving Sister Vivian Adams who resides in East Hampton, NJ, five daughters: Catanna Cook from Wilmington, DE, Lucy Countee of Camden, NJ, Tameka White of Trenton, NJ Claudette Parker of Trenton, NJ, Natasha Parker of Riverside, NJ and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.


Lastly, we would like to acknowledge his nursing aide Stephanie Lyons who cared for our father with love and kindness. Your being there with dad gave us peace of mind.
