Robert Handy

Obituary of Robert L. Handy

On August 2, 1944, Robert lee Handy, Sr, became the 10th of eleven Children born to the late Edward and Viola Scott Handy. Known affectionally to some as "Bobby" and others by 'Handy" he was a kind spirit who enjoyed life tremendously. Due to generational overlap, the oldest nephew was born in 1946 along with other nieces and nephews in succession. Bobby was a little brother to his siblings and near-peer role model to his nieces and nephews for the majority. Upon graduation from Edgewood High School, class of 61, Bobby attended trade school prior to enlisting in the United States Army as an engineer during the Vietnam War (1969-1971). Bobby's unique duality of personage filled the air with joy, laughter, and discipline. His oversight and gentle smirk prevented opportunities for the slightest possibility of mischievous behavior, while affirming "good conduct". He was the keeper of secrets and solace in times of sorrow. Bobby will be remembered for his strategic pool play, chauffeured rides to and from school, occasional trips to the candy store, and the change that allowed us to celebrate the musical arrival of "Mister softy" in the summer. He sung in the children's choir at Winslow United Methodist Church as a child, and retired from the Donio Trucking Company (Hammonton, New Jersey) after an extensive career as long-distance truck driver. Bobby was a devoted Father Brother, Uncle, and friend. He enjoyed a strategic game of pool, old cowboy movies, re-runs of the Rifleman, and baseball. He loved coca cola, cheesesteaks, spaghetti, and cheese twists: lest we forget the chocolate cookies with cream filling and a smooth glass of brandy. Bobby entered rest on September 20, 2022, at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents: brother, Edward, Jr., Johny, Marvin, Benjamin, Charles, and James Handy; sister, Viola Handy Fleming, Louella Handy Freeman, and Alberta B.Moorman. Bobby leaves behind to cherish his memory, a son, Robert, Jr., a loving and devoted sister, Marie Handy Covington; sister-in-law Peggy (Benjamin) Handy and Sylvia (Charles) Handy; dedicated niece, Doris Covington; a host of nieces, nephews, great and great nieces and nephews, and friends. He will be missed greatly. So long, Handy.''
