Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
William Norman Gardner, affectionately known as "Sonny", was born on February 20, 1932, in Philadelphia, PA to the late Mattie Maude Gardner. He was educated in the Philadelphia public school system.
Shortly after graduating high school, Sonny joined the United States Air Force where he served for twenty-two years. After suffering severe loss of hearing, he was transferred to the Pentagon where he reported to a Five-Star General for just over two years.
Upon leaving the Pentagon, Sonny moved to San Antonio, TX and attended St. Phillips College where he earned an associate degree in accounting. He later attended Southwest Texas State University earning a bachelor's degree in Occupational Education. After graduating, he taught accounting courses at St. Phillips College.
Sonny later moved to Berlin, New Jersey and joined Green Grove Baptist Church where he served on the Finance Ministry and Deacon Ministry for many years.
In 1993, Sonny met the love of his life, Lillian Gail Davis. They were united in marriage on June 17, 1995. He joined CCU shortly afterwards and served faithful on the Deacon's Ministry. Because of his vast knowledge and experience as a Deacon, other would often seek his advice.
Sonny had a deep passion for teaching. He taught Sunday School classes and ultimately CCU's New Members classes. His students were amazed by the depth of his biblical knowledge, as well as his method of teaching.
Prior to his declining heath, Sonny was an avid golfer, sometimes playing daily with his friends. He said, "it kept me in shape". ON occasion, when traveling, he would take his clubs with him so that he could "hit a few". He also enjoyed talking pictures and loved "cruising".
Sonny leaves to cherish his memory, his loving Wife Lillian Gardner; Brother-in-law James Davis; Sisters-in-law: Dorothy Davis and Tanya Davis; Two Special Nephews: James A. Davis (Elaine) and Sean D. Ransom (Andina) and a host of family members and friends.
