Please share a memory of Hattie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Hattie Geraldine Segers was born on August 4, 1931, the third of five children to the late Deacon Joseph and Helen Wood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the age of eight, her family relocated to Williamstown, NJ, where she accepted Christ. Hattie received her education through the Williamstown-Glassboro School system. Hattie was married on April 9, 1955 to the late Louis Segers Sr. and to that union was blessed with four children. As a young woman, Hattie worked for a sewing company doing piecework and as a nurse’s aide at a convalescence home in Cherry Hill, NJ. In April of 1969, she obtained a job at Stratford Nursing Home in Stratford, NJ and through hard work and dedication was promoted to an Activities Director. She remained at Stratford for 15 years and was able to further her education at Camden County College. Around 1984, Hattie left the nursing home and worked for Social Security for a year. In 1985, she was employed by ESI/Wyeth Ayerst, a pharmaceutical company in Cherry Hill, NJ, as a filling room operator until retirement in 1996. Hattie was a member and Deaconess at both White Oak Baptist Church in Lindenwold, NJ and Open Door Baptist Church in Berlin, NJ. Hattie and Louis Segers Sr. were very instrumental in the formation of Open Door Baptist Church. She also was a faithful member at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Magnolia, NJ, where she served on the Pastor’s Aide Committee and sang on the gospel choir, the Gospelaires. Hattie went on to form her own gospel group called Saving Grace, where she often sang lead. She was also a member of Bethany Baptist Church and in her later years attended Victory in Christ Christian Center in Westville, NJ with family. Hattie was affectionately known as “Lucy” to her family. She was very feisty, outspoken, lovable, caring and had a heart for helping people. Hattie liked music and singing gospel songs, arts and crafts, sewing for others, and making her own clothes. She taught sewing classes out of her home to middle school age girls. She liked cooking and entertaining family and friends at her home. In 2015 Hattie joined the Active Day Adult Day Care in Washington Township, NJ and had great and loving stories from her days at the center. On Friday, October 30, 2020, Hattie Geraldine Segers made her transition from labor to reward. She was preceded in death by her brothers, James, Joseph, and William Wood and sister, Mary Pinckney. Hattie leaves to cherish her memory children Sheila Huggins, Louis Segers Jr., Helen (Ron) Toney, and William (Kim) Segers, Grandchildren, Shanie (Varnell) Johnson, Athina Huggins, Othell Hunter, William Segers Jr., and Kyle Segers, Great-grandchildren, Za’Nyaha R.
