Obituary of Susan N. Clayton

Please share a memory of Susan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Susan Nadine (Toomer) Clayton was born September 23, 1946 in Camden, New Jersey. She was the second of seven siblings born to the union of the late Albert Walker Toomer, Sr., and Leola Dorothell (Quinn) Toomer. Susan was reared in East Berlin, NJ and was enrolled in the Berlin Township Elementary School System. She received her secondary education at Edgewood High School where she was a member of the Girls Hockey Team. During her childhood, Susan attended Sunday School at the Pilgrim’s Rest Disciples of Christ Church in East Berlin, which is where her formal religious training began. Later, as an adult, she returned and accepted the Lord as her personal savior and was baptized. She rejoined the church in December 2003 and became an active and faithful member. She served on the Usher Board and was a member of the Gospel Choir. She was also appointed to the Board of Trustees and was responsible for the Building and Grounds. In the early 70’s, Susan met a young serviceman by the name of George Clayton. They soon fell in love and were married on May 7, 1971, in Albion, NJ. As a couple, they lived in Germany and Florida before settling in Winslow Township, NJ. They became the proud parents of Susan Renee. Susan embraced the challenges of motherhood and diligently nurtured her daughter with patience and love. She also supported George in his endeavors and often joined him as he traveled throughout the country as a trucker. Susan was extremely energetic and loved working on projects inside and outside of the home. While she ‘knew her way around the kitchen’, and could muster up some tasty dishes, her gifts and talents were not confined to homemaking. In truth, she preferred the outdoors. She didn’t mind getting her hands dirty. No task was too great for her to conquer. If she couldn’t tackle it alone, she knew who to call for assistance…and they always came. She had ‘connections. Susan’s work ethic, a legacy of her parents, resulted in her to be able to successfully obtain employment throughout her lifetime. She held several jobs in a variety of areas, however, the job she loved the most was as a paraprofessional at the Gloucester Township Campus of the Camden County Technical School from which she retired in 2008. Over the years, she established and maintained many friendships with her colleagues from work. Susan was predeceased by her loving husband; George, parents; Albert and Leola Toomer, Sr., and a sister; Patricia Washington. She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her daughter; Susan Renee, siblings; Stanley (Maxine) Toomer, Wesley Toomer, Albert (Sonja) Toomer, Leola II (Dale) Castro, and Clarence Toomer, Godson; Sidney Riley and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
