William Hamon Young
William Hamon Young was born on January 25, 1932, in Newtown, Virginia, to the late Presley and Ellen (Harvey) Young. He was the third of twelve siblings,growing up in a loving and supportive family.
William received his education in the King and Queen County School System in Virginia. Guided by his parents and the congregation of First Mt. Olive Baptist Church, he developed a strong foundation in Christian faith and values that would guide him throughout his life.
As a young adult, William relocated to New Jersey, where he began working at the Moyer-Mitchell Poultry Company in Voorhees. There, he met and fell in love with Gladys Toomer. They were united in holy matrimony in November 1956 in Berlin, New Jersey, and together they built a loving home in Camden, where they raised their family. William was a devoted husband and father, known for his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family. He pursued opportunities that allowed him to support his loved ones, including many years of dedicated service with Formigli Brothers Concrete. A man of creativity and skill, William enjoyed working with his hands.He constructed and played guitars, took pride in gardening, and maintained a beautifully manicured yard. William was known for his impeccable appearance and sense of style, and he cherished his collection of cars, trucks, and motorcycles, always keeping them in pristine condition.
William was deeply committed to his faith. For a time, he worshipped with his wife at Bright Memorial United Body Disciples of Christ Church in Camden. Later, he transferred his membership to Bethany Baptist Church in Lindenwold,
where he also served as a custodian. Even when he was no longer able to attend services in person, William remained a faithful supporter of his church community. On January 26, 2026, William completed his earthly journey in Cedar Brook, New Jersey, at the home of his devoted daughter, Constance, and son-in-law, Kerwin Smith, Sr. He leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and devotion to family and
faith.
William was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gladys; his daughter, Dorothea Wilson; brothers, Thomas, George, Tyrone, and James Young; and sisters, Geneva
Shelton, Olivia Deyo, and Queen Ester Pollard.
He is survived by his sons, Clifford (Betty) Toomer, Sr. and Craig Hamon (Lisa)Young; daughter, Constance (Kerwin, Sr.) Smith; son-in-law, James Wilson; eleven
grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; brothers, Presley, Jr. and Reverend Frederick (Shirley) Young; sisters, Florence Vessels and Clarise Gwathmey; and a
host of other family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
William will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his kindness, strength,
and unwavering devotion to his loved ones.
