Obituary of Mary E. Poe

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mary Estelle Garner Poe was born January 31, 1954 in Princeton, NJ  to the late Paul and Elizabeth Garner.  After the death of her mother, Mary was raised by her grandmother, Madeline Clark.  The family resided in Trenton, NJ.

Mary was educated in the Trenton Public School System. Afterwards, she joined the workforce and held several jobs.  Her most recent employment was as a bookkeeper with  Diversified Dental Services located in Berlin, NJ.

Upon her marriage to Howard Poe,  the couple   resided in Albion,  NJ and eventually relocated to Chesilhurst, NJ where they shared their home with their pet dogs, Buster and Patches (who predeceased her).

As a child, Mary attended  Solid Rock  First Born Church of the Living God in Hopewell, NJ. She accepted Christ as her savior and served there for many years under the pastorate of Elder  Sweets. She was a member of the youth choir and several other auxiliaries.

After moving to  South Jersey, she united with the Pilgrim’s Rest Disciples of Christ Holy Church under the leadership of Bishop James E. Moore, Sr.  She was a licensed missionary  and served  as the church secretary, and was also a member of the Trustee Board, and Pastor Search Committee. She  served the church at the  national level as the Assistant Secretary of the General Assembly and Vice President of the Mission Department. She was active and faithful in her commitment to the church even during her illness.

Mary was  pleasant and soft-spoken.  She loved to laugh and she possessed  a giving spirit. She was an avid reader and tried her hand at arts and crafts.  She also toyed with sewing and playing the piano. She adored the hymns of the church.

Early in the morning, on Friday, May 26, 2017, Mary took flight, leaving her earthly house behind and followed the voice of her savior to her new home, not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Besides her parents and grandparents, she  was predeceased by her brother, Paul Garner.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, Howard Poe, two sisters, Patricia Daniels of Ewing, NJ   and Donna Tucker of Trenton, NJ; many nieces, nephews and  cousins, as well as a dear friend and sister in Christ, Brenda Riley.
