Obituary of Lillie Mae McFarlane

God, in his infinite wisdom and compassion, received unto Himself our beloved Lillie Mae McFarlane on Sunday, May 1, 2016. She was born to the late Thomas J. Mathews and Leola (Young) Mathews on September 22, 1922 in Quitman, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Eual McFarlane, and 11 siblings; Rudeon Mathews, Izola (Mathews) Jones, Mary (Mathews) Campbell, Lucinda Mathews, Simp Mathews, Isaac Mathews, Anita (Mathews) Newkirk, Edmund Mathews, Arnetta (Mathews) Houston, James Mathews, Queen (Mathews) Samuels. At the age of 3, Lillie Mae moved to Palatka, Florida where she attended the Public School system. At 9 years of age, she gave her life to Christ. Lillie Mae moved to New York where she became a member of Metropolitan Methodist Church where she was active in the church and a member of the choir. In 1946, in Elkton, MD, Lillie Mae married Eual McFarlane. Although Lillie Mae had no children of her own, she raised three nephews; Frederick Matthews, Russell Moore, Jerome Mathews, and one niece, Michelle Houston. She helped in the rearing of many of her nieces and nephews. In 1949, Lillie Mae moved to Burlington, NJ. On June 15, 1955, she became a member of St. Mary Street United Methodist Church where she served on the Usher Board and was on the Sick & Distress Committee until her health declined. Lillie Mae retired from General Motors in 1987. With her spare time she enjoyed working in her yard and would visit the sick and shut in. She would take the elderly church members to doctor appointments, shopping and to church. In her passing, she leaves to mourn and cherish her memories: Her nephews, Frederick Mathews of Green Cove Springs, Florida, Russell Moore of Somerdale, New Jersey, Jerome Mathews of Burlington Township, New Jersey; her niece, Michelle Houston of Brandywine, Maryland and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, great great great nieces and nephews. A special thanks to nieces, nephews and caretakers that attended to Lillie Mae’s needs and Cedar Tree Assisted Living.
